1900
1900 Toppan Printing Limited Partnership founded by a group centered around former engineers from the Finance Ministry's Printing Bureau, who used what was then the most advanced printing technology available, the Erhort letterpress (galvanoglyph).
Erhöt relief printing block. Company office and factory at the time of founding in 1900.
1908 Reorganized as Toppan Printing Co., Ltd.
1920 HB photomechanical prepress method and accompanying equipment introduced.
1926 Koishikawa Paper Container plant opened.
1938 Itabashi plant completed and opened.
1945 Selected as winner in all categories (¥1,000, ¥500, ¥100, ¥10, ¥5, ¥1) in the Finance Ministry's Bank of Japan bank note design bidding.
1946 Itabashi plant, Fuji plant, Osaka Branch plant designated as Finance Ministry supervised plants according to regulations governing factories manufacturing currency. (This designation remained until 1952)
1951 Developed Toppan's multicolor format printing (MCF printing) prepress technology for securities.
1958 Began prepress and printing of decorative paper used as industrial materials.
1932: Elementary school Japanese language primer. Cigarette package designs for new tobacco brands Shikishima, Yamato, Asahi and Yamazakura printed in 1904.
1960
1960 Opened a factory for precision parts such as masks for mesa transistors and shadow masks for television cathode-ray tubes.
1961 Service Center opened in Ginza, Tokyo (Renamed Toppan Idea Center in 1964.)
1964 Toppan Printing Co., (H.K.) Ltd., established in Hong Kong.
1964 Representative office opened in New York.
1965 Toppan Moore Business Forms Co., Ltd., (now Toppan Forms Co., Ltd.), established as a joint venture with Canada's Moore Corp.
1945-48: Postwar period sees publication of revived and new magazines. Paper currency from directly after World War II.
1970
1970 Developed and used the first computerized typesetting system in Japan.
1971 Representative office opened in London.
1972 Central Research institute established as the core for technical development.
1973 Technologies exported in succession following completion of the revolutionary Toppan TH Gravure Process for prepress.
1976 Toppan EP-Pak, paper containers for long-term storage of liquids, developed.
1978 Multiplex-type hologram developed with Tokyo Institute of Technology and Fuji Photo Optical Co., Ltd.
1980 Toppan Video Prepress System, the first system in Japan to carry out direct platemaking from video signals developed.
1980
1983 Cards with internal integrated circuits (smart cards) developed.
Production of video camera picture tubes and inorganic multiplayer filters for solid picture elements begun.
1985 Franco-Japanese Modern Poster Exhibition opened in Tokyo with France's Ministry of Culture.
1986 Headquarters building and Technical Research Institute completed.
1987 Denshi Media Service Co., Ltd. jointly established with Philips Electronics.
Printing Museum showroom opened.
Toppan Packaging Center opened.
1988 High-resolution image data for printing transmitted internationally, used at Seoul Olympics.
Computer graphics stereo (3D) printing technology developed.
1990
1990 Transmission of high-resolution image data achieved with INS Net 1500.
1991 Ecology Center opened.
Collection and reprinting of Best 100 Posters of Japan completed.
1992 Toppan Printing Co., (Shenzhen) Ltd. established.
1993 Tokyo Metropolitan Prepress Toppan Co., Ltd. established as "third-sector" corporation employing persons with severe disabilities.
Certification for ISO 9002 obtained for manufacture of photomasks, photomask blanks, leadframes, and printed wiring boards.
1994 Toppan Printing Co., Ltd. jointly established in Shanghai, China.
Cyber Publishing Japan, an Internet shopping mall experiment, begun.
1995 Best 100 Posters from Europe & the United States reprinting project completed.
Toppan Printing Co., (H.K.) Ltd.'s Yuen Long plant went into operation.
Cartocan paper beverage can developed.
1996 Established Multimedia Division.
GALA printing studio opened.
1997 Toppan Moore Co., Ltd., renamed Toppan Forms Co., Ltd.
Toppan Multimedia Fair '97 held in seven locations throughout Japan.
GALA awarded the Nikkei Most Advanced Site '97 Prize.
1998 Toppan Forms Co., Ltd., listed in the 1st Section of the TSE.
Shiga plant receives the first ISO 14001 certification in the printing industry's electronics sector.
1999 Received the "Company of Excellent Disclosure Practices" award from the TSE.
Built a super cleanroom within the Technical Research Institute.
Launched the "Bitway" digital content distribution service.
2000
2000 Ceremony to mark completion of the Toppan Koishikawa Building.
Toppan Fair 2000 was held in six locations throughout Japan.
Toppan Vision 21 announced at the 100th anniversary ceremony.
Commenced applied research for digitally archiving cultural assets in collaboration with the Beijing Palace Museum.
Opening of the Toppan Hall and the Printing Museum, Tokyo.
2001 Established Toppan CFI (Taiwan) Co., Ltd. and Toppan PAP (Taiwan) Co., Ltd.
Announced a strategic partnership with E Ink Corporation to develop color electronic ink displays.
Toppan Gemplus Services Co., Ltd. for card services jointly established.
2002 Established a system solution joint venture, Toppan NSW Co., Ltd., with Nippon Systemware Co., Ltd.
Established Toppan NEC Circuit Solutions Inc. as a result of a corporate separation with NEC.
Toppan received the Mecenat Encouragement Award at the 2002 Mecenat Awards ceremony for operation of the Toppan Hall.
