Reduction of emissions by 2030 targets achievement of aims of Paris Agreement

Tokyo – February 26, 2019 – Toppan Printing (Toppan) (TSE:7911), a global leader in communication, packaging, and electronics solutions, has set greenhouse gas (GHG) emission targets to 2030 approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The targets apply to the entire Toppan Group and are consistent with Toppan’s efforts to contribute to a sustainable society, mitigation of global warming, and conservation of the environment.

Science Based Targets

SBTi promotes the setting of science-based medium-to-long-term targets for GHG emission reduction as a means to achieve the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping the increase in global average temperature to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.

Toppan has set targets of 30% reductions in Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned or controlled sources) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy) GHG emissions and a 20% reduction in Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions excluding those in Scope 2) by 2030, with 2017 as the base year. Reductions will be achieved through rational use of energy at plants and offices, use of sustainable materials, reduction of waste, and other initiatives applied throughout the supply chain.

“We are very pleased that our GHG emission reduction targets have been approved by the SBTi,” said Yasuhiko Yamano, director and managing executive officer overseeing environmental activities at Toppan. “Toppan engages in a range of sustainability-focused activities aligned with the United Nations Global Compact, the Sustainable Development Goals and the core subjects set out by ISO 26000. We will continue to pursue these initiatives as part of our commitment to tackling global warming and creating long-term value for a sustainable society.”
