Net zero Scope 3 GHG emissions and preservation of biodiversity added to Environmental Vision, Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets raised

Tokyo – April 27, 2023 – Toppan (TYO: 7911), a global leader in communication, security, packaging, décor materials, and electronics solutions, has expanded the Toppan Group Environmental Vision 2050 to accelerate initiatives for a sustainable society in which all kinds of life can continue to thrive in the future. The Environmental Vision was devised in 2021 to set out long-term approaches to global environmental issues. Toppan has now enhanced the vision, demonstrating its commitment to tackling environmental issues in collaboration with the supply chain and local communities by adding the goal of net zero Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the theme of preservation of biodiversity.

In addition to the Environmental Vision, Toppan has also revised the Toppan Group Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets for Fiscal 2030, the target year for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Reduction targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions have been raised in line with the global 1.5℃ threshold. In addition, new targets have been set for preservation of biodiversity and the optimal use of water, while the target for final landfill waste volume reduction has also been increased.

To achieve the Environmental Vision and Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets, Toppan will address environmental issues across the entire value chain, including the supply chain, and work to preserve a rich natural environment that can be passed on to future generations.

“The Toppan Group’s business activities as well as our lives, economies, and social systems rely on the foundation of a stable and rich environment. Environmental problems are linked in complex ways, as shown by climate change’s effect on biodiversity, and there are both global and local aspects to the issues,” said Hironori Majima, Director & Executive Officer of Toppan’s Manufacturing Management Division. “We have revised our environmental vision and targets as we focus on carbon neutrality, a circular economy, and a nature-positive world, and will work with all stakeholders to be a creator of value for a sustainable society.”

Background

Toppan advances sustainability management across the Toppan Group globally to provide solutions to social issues through business. As a member of international society, Toppan established a specialist department for ecological matters in the early 1990s, kicking off continuous efforts to undertake business activities that consider conservation of the global environment. Toppan engages the entire Group in tackling environmental issues, establishing the Toppan Group Declaration on the Global Environment in 2009 and devising the Toppan Group Environmental Vision 2050 and Toppan Group Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets for Fiscal 2030 in 2021.

Environmental destruction and its impact have had an increasingly negative effect on society and the economy in recent years. Destruction of nature threatens biodiversity and the continued existence of forests, and multiple disasters associated with climate change have occurred. As the Toppan Group grows, its customers, suppliers and vendors, local communities, employees, and other stakeholders are also expanding on a global scale. Toppan has decided to revise its Environmental Vision and Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets to maximize positive impacts on the environment by coordinating with stakeholders and the entire supply chain, building stronger relationships with local communities, and tackling issues together.

Details of the revision

Contributing to Decarbonization
In addition to Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions, the revised vision sets out a commitment to net zero Scope 3 GHG emissions. Reduction targets for Scope 1+2 and Scope 3 GHG emissions have been increased to align with the target of keeping the rise in average global temperature to less than 1.5℃ above pre-industrial levels. The boundary (number of sites) for the reduction targets has also been expanded.

Preserving Biodiversity
To help shape a society that coexists in harmony with nature and a world that is nature positive, biodiversity has been added to the Environmental Vision. The Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets also now include targets for procurement of raw materials of paper, to be addressed across the supply chain, and for preservation of regions in which humans and the natural environment coexist, in order to contribute to local communities. Toppan also advances collaborative efforts as a member of the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity launched by a group of industry, private, and public sector organizations, including the Japanese Ministry of the Environment.

Contributing to Resource Circulation
The target for reduction of final landfill waste volume has been revised by expanding the boundary.

Optimal Water Use
The Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets now include targets based on water risk surveys of individual Toppan Group sites around the world. Specifically, targets for reduction of water use have been set for high risk sites, which have been identified by using tools such as Aqueduct* to conduct water risk assessment of relevant watersheds and by carrying out investigations at the sites based on questionnaires.
*Aqueduct is a water risk assessment tool developed by the World Resources Institute.

Toppan Group Environmental Vision 2050
