Toppan Continues to be Named to Leading ESG Investing Indices from FTSE Russell and MSCI

Tokyo – July 21, 2023 – Toppan (TYO: 7911), a global leader in communication, security, packaging, décor materials, and electronics solutions, has again been recognized for its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices with selection to numerous leading indices, including the FTSE4Good Index Series, FTSE Blossom Japan Index, and FTSE Blossom Japan Sector Relative Index developed by FTSE Russell and the MSCI Japan Empowering Women Index (WIN) compiled by MSCI Inc.

The FTSE Blossom Japan Index, FTSE Blossom Japan Sector Relative Index, and MSCI Japan Empowering Women Index (WIN) are all used by the Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) of Japan as operating benchmarks for ESG investing.

Indices developed by FTSE Russell are recognized for comprehensive assessment covering all aspects of ESG practices and for clarity of selection criteria. The MSCI Japan Empowering Women Index (WIN), meanwhile, focuses on assessing gender diversity in the workplace based on various ESG metrics, including the percentages of women among new hires and management.

Toppan is also included in a number of other prominent ESG investing indices. In 2022, Toppan was named as a Supplier Engagement Leader for the second consecutive year and given a Climate Change score of A- by CDP, the global non-profit organization focused on environmental disclosure.

“We are very pleased that Toppan’s practices continue to be recognized by leading ESG investing indices,” said Fumie Ikeda, General Manager of Sustainability Promotion at Toppan. “We will continue to work with all of our stakeholders to advance efforts for a sustainable society, ensure a high level of transparency in disclosure, and accelerate our ESG initiatives as a leading company in providing solutions to social issues worldwide through Digital Transformation and Sustainable Transformation.”

Toppan’s sustainability initiatives

Toppan advances a range of sustainability-related activities, incorporating the principles of the United Nations Global Compact and the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The TOPPAN SDGs STATEMENT, published in November 2019, sets out Toppan’s commitment to intensify its related initiatives and incorporate the SDGs into management. TOPPAN Business Action for SDGs, announced in November 2020, specifies the areas of focus in which Toppan aims to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through its business.

To accelerate efforts aimed at shaping a sustainable society in which all forms of life can continue to exist into the future, in April this year Toppan expanded the Toppan Group Environmental Vision 2050, which lays out long-term approaches to environmental issues. Enhancement of the vision includes demonstrating Toppan’s commitment to tackling environmental issues in collaboration with the supply chain and local communities by adding the goal of net zero Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the theme of preservation of biodiversity.

At the same time, Toppan also revised the Toppan Group Medium-and-Long-Term Environmental Targets for Fiscal 2030, the target year for the SDGs. Reduction targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions have been raised in line with the global 1.5℃ threshold, and new targets have been set for preservation of biodiversity and the optimal use of water. The target for final landfill waste volume reduction has also been increased.
